RESEARCH PROJECTS
To provide a tangible showcase of my research, I have included a portfolio of my most recent projects. Take a moment to explore below and reach out if you’re interested in learning more about what I have to offer.
MA PROJECT
Music &Â Language Acquisition
My experience of teaching the Community Language Program makes me wonder if teachers are theoretically informed to use songs in their lessons, although English songs are widely used in an ESL/EFL classroom. I am curious to know if we use a song in a lesson because we have theoretical and/or empirical support to do so. Or do we just believe that playing music is fun? If our decisions are backed up by research, what research is there? In what aspect(s) do songs facilitate L2 acquisition? And if research suggests that songs be used in ESL/EFL, how should we use them?
LITERATURE REVIEW
L2 Motivation & L2 Writing
Investigated the relationship between L2 motivation and L2 writing focusing on Z. Dörnyei’s (2005, 2009) L2 Motivational Self System (LMSS)
Collected, analyzed, and critiqued 7 empirical studies
Wrote a 15-page literature review
PHONETICS & PHONOLOGYÂ PROJECT
L2 English Speaker's Speech
Collected L1 Japanese/L2 English speaker’s speech and phonetically transcribed it with an interlinear gloss
Analyzed systematic differences between the L2 speaker’s pronunciation and Standard American English focusing on patterns of vowel insertion and missing sounds in her phonemic inventory
Examined types of consonants the speaker produced and attempted to find rules which govern her word-final consonant production
Wrote a 10-page research paper
